Agriculture in Melanesia – Grade 9 Student’s Book by Brian Robertson and Ekpo Ossum

Price: $38.00

This book provides grade 9 students with the support necessary to achieve all of the agriculture syllabus outcomes detailed for this level. All agriculture students are required to cover the first two core units and two of the other six optional units or one optional unit from this book plus a school designed optional unit.

Core Unit, Agriculture in Papua New Guinea 1 covers the importance of agriculture to PNG, a study of soils, the functions of plant processes and the husbandry practices required to achieve sustainable agriculture.

Core Unit, Agriculture Production Systems in Papua New Guinea 1 covers the economic and ecological environments of agriculture at provincial and national levels and the development and reproduction of livestock.

The optional units expect students to work in small groups and to undertake an agriculture project.

They are expected to keep records for all stages of their project and write a final project report.

Appendix 1 in this book Writing about agriculture demonstrates to students exactly how to write up their projects. It shows students how to write and the students decide what to write following examples of the kind of writing that is required.

This provides excellent practice in developing the skills students may need some day when applying to the bank for a loan to start a project.

Price: $47.50

This Teacher’s Resource is very simple to use. The headings follow exactly the headings in the student book for grade 9.

It has additional advice to offer if students are likely to have difficulty in understanding a particular topic. It also answers or comments on all the questions students are asked throughout the text and in the Activity sections of the book.

There is detailed information in this guide as to how the teacher may use Appendix 1 Writing about agriculture. The new Agriculture Lower Secondary Syllabus states that student achievement of course outcomes will be assessed mainly through student writing on the various project processes. Appendix 1 Writing about agriculture is therefore designed to help students learn more about how to write in the aims of their project, the resources plan, the marketing plan and eventually the complete project report.

Making a Living Practical Guide – Coffee and Cocoa Farming by Brian Robertson

Like all the books in this series the main purpose is to let young people know how they can make some money by starting a business that is well within their capability. They are written to be easily understood, provide honest advice and encourage enthusiasm.

Coffee and Cocoa Farming are both very popular farming ventures in Papua New Guinea. The book includes details about the biology and origins of the species of both crops.

The chapter on environmental issues includes a discussion about consumer trends in importing countries. The author makes no excuse for recommending the use of organic rather than intensive methods to grow both crops. This has nothing to do with the quality of the product—I don’t know if it makes much difference. It is simply from the point of view of good economics for the smallholder cocoa or coffee grower.

There is an interesting section explaining the reasons for loss of soil of fertility and how to improve it. The legume family of plants have a role to play here.

The chapter on pests and diseases has detailed information on fungal and bacterial disease as well as information about pests for both crops. For this chapter it would have been better had the book been in full colour but at least the relevant information is all there.

Making a Living Practical Guide – Insect Farming by Brian Robertson and David Whittaker

Price: $17.50

Like all the books in this series the main purpose is to let young people know how they can make some money by starting a business that is well within their capability. They are written to be easily understood, provide honest advice and encourage enthusiasm.

Insect Farming explains very simply how to make changes to old gardens to encourage particular insects to an area. Rather than walking for kilometres through the bush looking for specific insects you encourage the insects to come closer to you.

The book has a six page table which details the types of insect that are likely to be found in different areas of PNG and the types of food plants that attract them.

This means you don’t waste your time trying to attract insects that don’t exist in your area you simply plant the right shrubs and vines to attract the right insects.

The main buyer of insects in Papua New Guinea is probably the Insect Farming and Trading Agency (IFTA) at Bulolo in Morobe and there may be others of course. The book explains in detail how to kill, preserve and package insects to send to IFTA. The other author of this book, David Whittaker, worked at IFTA at the time of writing. He was (and is) the insect expert. He went to work in Africa somewhere. If you are reading this please get in touch David.

Making a Living Practical Guide – Rabbit Farming by Brian Robertson

Price: $17.50

Like all the books in this series the main purpose is to let young people know how they can make some money by starting a business that is well within their capability. They are written to be easily understood, provide honest advice and encourage enthusiasm.

Rabbit Farming was written by me but I must be honest and say that my wife who kept many rabbits when we were first married helped a lot. We really needed extra money in those days as well as cheap roast rabbit to feed the kids!

The book has clear diagrams with dimensions to enable the construction of rabbit hutches or wire cages. In addition there are instructions on how to make feeders and drinkers.

Information is also given about what and what not to feed rabbits. One of the best foods are the plants in the legume family. Reasons for this are explained in detail.

There is a chapter on work and money, which includes a section on marketing and record keeping. The records you should keep if you intend to breed and sell rabbits are particularly important.

John Sera the fellow on the front cover of this book kept rabbits at his place in Segomi village in the Unggai/Bena District of Eastern Highlands near Siokiei Community School. If you recognise yourself on the cover John please get in touch and let me know if you are still keeping rabbits.

Making a Living Practical Guide – Vanilla Farming by Brian Robertson and Peter Donigi

Like all the books in this series the main purpose is to let young people know how they can make some money by starting a business that is well within their capability. They are written to be easily understood, provide honest advice and encourage enthusiasm.

Vanilla Farming was written in 2005 when the vanilla price was at its lowest for a long time. Peter Donigi and I were writing it then because a year or so previously the price had been sky high. This is the case with many agricultural products and this book explains reasons for this very carefully in a chapter on risk management. It can be the same for coffee, cocoa and many other farm products to a greater or lesser degree.

It was Peter who provided all the knowledge about how to grow vanilla. He grows vanilla in East Sepik.

This book also explains the biology of the vanilla plant and the different species that are grown in PNG.

It can be grown in many places in the highlands and lowlands but does need good rainfall over about 10 months of the year.

Curing vanilla pods takes great skill and care. It is very well explained in this book and there is no reason why anyone should not be able to produce export quality vanilla pods to sell for a very good price.

Brian Robertson, co-author of Vanilla Farming.

Organising School Agriculture by Brian Robertson and Kerepuke Toben

This is the first book I co-authored for the agriculture teachers in Papua New Guinea and other South Pacific Island countries.

My co-author Karapuke Toben and I were worried that many agriculture teachers got themselves into bother because they failed to keep good school farm records. They were always being blamed for losing money and we both felt it was usually because of carelessness on their part rather than any criminal intent.

In addition we both know that school agriculture is also the most difficult subject to organise and so we felt a book to help teachers was required.

This book covers all the most difficult aspects of organising school agriculture from the availability of facilities to organising and assessing practical work and planning your program for a year. Teachers should find it really useful.

Each chapter starts with a drawing that usually makes fun of some aspect of the agriculture education process, or teaching or school life in general. Some are funnier than others! I hope you enjoy the funny ones. (See sample below)

The book also includes materials at the end of each chapter, which include questions and instructions on how to use these questions in an in-service situation. In the appendix at the end of the book there are extra resources that are linked to the questions at the end of each chapter.

Brian Robertson, co-author of Organising School Agriculture.
